Business electricity contract types

Fixed-rate contract

Unit and standing charges are set for the contract term, which can make budgeting more predictable.

Flexible / variable contract

Rates can move with the wholesale market. Often suited to larger users who want to manage purchasing over time.

Out-of-contract rates

If your contract ends and nothing new is agreed, suppliers usually move you onto out-of-contract rates, which are often higher.

Deemed rates

Applied when you move into premises and use energy without agreeing a contract. Reviewing early helps you avoid staying on them.

Common meter types

Standard / single-rate

One unit rate for all hours. Common for smaller businesses.

Economy 7 / multi-rate

Different rates for day and night usage, useful if you run overnight.

Half-hourly & smart

Readings every 30 minutes. Required for larger users and helpful for understanding usage.
