Meter readings and winter bills: avoid estimated charges

Winter usage tends to rise for heating and lighting, and that is when estimated bills can drift furthest from reality. A recurring tip around the new year is to submit an up-to-date meter reading — and it applies to businesses too.

If your bill shows an "E" next to the reading, it has been estimated. Over time, estimates can lead to underpayment followed by a large catch-up bill, or overpayment that sits with the supplier.

Taking a dated photo of each meter at the start of the year gives you an accurate record. If you have a smart or half-hourly meter, check that it is sending readings — a meter that has stopped communicating may quietly put you back onto estimates.

Accurate readings also make any contract review more useful, because quotes are based on your real consumption. When you are ready, upload your latest bill through our 30-second quote and UTIVO will take it from there.
